The Laboratory Services Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards provides testing and calibration services to the manufacturing, commercial and public sectors in the country. It is accredited by United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and provides these services through five laboratories, Chemical, Electrical, Fibre, Materials and Metrology. Each laboratory is staffed by highly trained and qualified personnel and is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment.

Other services provided include advice in various related areas, method development, training in analytical techniques and making recommendations with respect to equipment selection and Test Methods. On behalf of the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) of the USA the Division carries out inspection for electrical items which are manufactured locally, for example, air conditioning units.

All tests and calibrations are conducted strictly in accordance with national, regional and international standards. These services are designed to:

  • Enhance competitiveness and efficiency.
  • Provide accurate, reliable and consistent test results.
  • Facilitate access to regional and international markets.
  • Inspire greater customer confidence and promote increased customer satisfaction.
  • Improve overall business performance

To establish and maintain a calibration and testing facility, well-known and respected locally, regionally and internationally for its integrity, credibility and service.

We will strive to maximize efficiency and utility, through careful analysis and understanding of our internal and external stakeholders needs, so that customer satisfaction is achieved through conscientious efforts at continuous improvement.

We will also continue to promote the development of the nation, through trade and industrial competitiveness by improving the quality of products and services through excellence in calibration and testing.

The Laboratory Services Division is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025: 1999 – General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories. Quality Policy Statement
The Laboratory Services Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards, the National Standards Body, is fully committed to the provision of products and services in its areas of operation to ensure customer satisfaction through an understanding of current and future customer needs and expectations.

Our staff is committed to providing prompt and reliable service while ensuring valid results through our compliance with ISO/IEC 17025. Tests and calibrations will be carried out in accordance with the stated methods and the clients’ requirements.

Our policies for operation are stated in the Quality Manual, which outlines our quality system. The objectives of the policies are to ensure that our highest achievable level of quality is maintained throughout our operation.

The Laboratory maintains the confidentiality and proprietary rights of all information including type of work performed and results of tests and calibrations to the extent allowable by law.

The Quality Manual is the definitive reference document for the operation of the quality system of the Laboratory. It is the responsibility of all staff working in the Laboratory to familiarize themselves with its contents (including periodic amendments) and to conduct their work according to the policies and procedures described therein, or to which reference is made.

The Executive Management of the Bureau is committed to providing the resources required for implementing and sustaining this system. The Head, Laboratory Services Division is responsible for implementing the policies of the Quality System in the Laboratory. The Management Representative, Laboratory Quality System is responsible for advising on, and monitoring of all aspects of quality in the Division.
